Transform an old plastic lawn chair into a stylish garden planter on TikTok

YouTube

Not every flower needs to be planted directly into your garden — placing some in pots adds variety and visual interest to your landscaping. Plus, it makes your plants more mobile so that you can move them around your yard depending on the weather. But you don’t have to stick to an average plastic or ceramic pot when putting flowers into a container. Instead, TikTok user @vilda143 posted a video demonstrating how to turn an old lawn chair into a chic planter. It’s a simple way to take an ordinary container and stylize it to fit your unique aesthetics.

When you take an old lawn chair and turn it into a planter, you’re upcycling it. Similarly to recycling, this art form saves items from ending up in landfills by giving them a new life. Maybe you have a broken chair, like in the TikTok; rather than putting the whole thing in the trash, you can upcycle the portion that’s still intact and cut out the damaged center for a planter to sit. By upcycling it, the piece is being reused as something of higher value than it originally was. Not only is this hack eco-friendly, but it’ll save your pockets too. So look around your yard and see if there are any lawn chairs that you can turn into a chic planter.

The first step to creating these unique planters is finding the right chair. In the video, they use a plastic lawn chair. Although, you can use wooden ones as well. It’s all up to your personal preference and style. Then you’ll need to pick out what container you want to use for the center of the planter. Some people slip plastic or terracotta pots into the seat of the chair, but you can use almost anything, as long as it has drainage holes. In the case of Vilda’s video, they use a large plastic strainer.

When you have all your components ready, it’s time to wipe them all down with soapy water. After they’re clean and dry, you can start this hack. Flip your container upside down and use it to trace the shape onto the seat of the chair. Then follow your guide to cut it out with a circular saw. A great way to hold everything together is to place some E6000 glue around the lip of your container before sliding it into the chair, but this step is an option. Once it’s all together, you can spray paint the piece or leave it how it is. Give it time to dry, and then you’re ready to start planting. Simply fill the container with soil or line it with burlap beforehand. Then add your plant, top it off with more potting mix, and water it well.

When you’re decorating your garden with potted plants, you need to do some research before putting any variety into a container. Plants have different care instructions and may require a lot of space for their roots to grow. If you’re looking at what flowers to put in your new chic planter, you can consider begonias and marigolds. Both produce beautiful blooms in many different colors. Depending on the characteristics of your garden, you may want to choose one over the other. Begonias thrive with only part sun, while marigolds prefer the heat of full sun.

If you don’t want to put flowers in your new pot, you can look at other types of plants. Designing a mini succulent and cacti garden is a super cute way to style your lawn chair planter. Since they are going to be outside, make sure you live in an area that’s hot and has full sun. Plus, they prefer dry soil, so you won’t have to worry about watering them as much. Another option is sweet potato vines. Their foliage will grow fast and trail lusciously down the legs of the chair. Just make sure to keep their soil moist.
