Consider waiting until after sunset to mow the lawn

It’s important to mow your lawn regularly to promote new growth, ward off diseases, and keep it looking satisfyingly uniform. However, you might not have known there is an optimal time of day to cut your grass, and it isn’t just before sunset. The reason you should avoid evening grass cutting is because dew begins to form as it gets close to sunset. This puts your grass at risk of issues like illness and fungus, making it difficult for your lawn to thrive. 

Cutting your grass in the evening may be more convenient if you work during the day, but save the task for your day off to ensure you’re giving your lawn the best chance to grow successfully. Grass is susceptible to illnesses like turf disease if mowed in the evening since there is a lack of recovery time before dew sets in. This can make your grass look patchy and generally unkempt, with bits of discoloration and, worse than that, mold.

The best time to cut your grass is between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. This gives your freshly cut lawn adequate time to dry, reducing the risk of dew settling in and causing turf disease and mold. If you live in a colder climate, we recommend mowing closer to 8 a.m. to give the grass added time to dry and recover. 

During spring and summer when the sun gradually begins to set later, you have some leeway to mow a little bit later. The one thing to keep in mind is that, unless it’s a blazing hot day, you should map out several hours of drying time before you think the sun will set. Nobody wants to deal with a diseased lawn, and bringing it back to life can take a lot of time, and can be an expensive process depending on how far gone your lawn is. To avoid this, stick to mowing mid-morning.
