Singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette knows the importance of meditation and being alone with your thoughts. “Meditating, sitting in the deep stillness, has almost always been a regulating force for me,” she told Vogue. Because of this, she’s added one unique feature to her backyard patio: a white bathtub with beautiful rose gold feet and a matching faucet. This tub provides her with the perfect place to be alone, even if it’s for a short amount of time. “Four and a half minutes of bliss is better than zero minutes of bliss,” she wrote on her Instagram.

While some may not understand why you would want a bathtub in your backyard, Morissette thinks it’s an excellent option for relaxation. It’s similar to a hot tub, except it’s smaller, doesn’t require chlorine, and the water is fresh every time. Further, it allows you to complete the typically rushed task of showering or bathing at a slower pace while surrounded by nature, which could quiet your spirit and come with plenty of psychological benefits.

Next to her beautiful tub, Alanis Morissette has a cushioned wooden armchair, which is the perfect place to drape a towel — ready for you when you exit the water. She also has a cheetah print rug in the space to provide extra comfort and a beautiful pattern. Around the bathtub, she includes beautiful landscaping, including shrubs, plants, and fences, making the area feel more private. Overhead, she has a wooden pergola, which keeps the weather at bay and protects the tub from falling debris like leaves and twigs.

On top of the bathtub, Morissette has a long, wooden tray holding various items like soaps and bath salts. If desired, you could also use a tray like this to support a book or an electronic device, so you have a source of entertainment while soaking. However, to really live like Morissette, dedicate your bathing time to sitting silently and meditating without distractions.

What to consider before installing an outdoor bathtub

Although installing an outdoor bathtub can create a relaxing atmosphere, there are a few negative aspects to consider. The first is that this bathtub will cost you more to install outdoors than indoors. This is because the plumbing will need to reach the tub, and the water and heat sources will need to be nearby. You’ll also need to factor in other expenses like privacy walls and landscaping, which aren’t a concern for indoor bathtubs.

Further, though a tub is quite small, you should consider its location before designing the rest of your backyard. Since you’ll need some privacy, placing it in the corner of a fence or surrounding it with greenery may be best. To make the most out of this space, you’ll also want to purchase a couple of extra items. For instance, to keep bugs away, a citronella candle from Target could work, and if you’re going to drain the water into your garden, use biodegradable body wash.
