If you have a lot of potted plants taking up space on your patio or if you’re looking for a unique way to display your houseplants without taking up too much space, this DIY is right up your alley. With just a pallet and either metal wire or flower pot rings, you can create a gorgeous vertical garden. This is perfect for herb gardens, small or medium potted plants, and even vases of flowers. Since pallets can typically be found for free at retail stores, this project is extremely affordable.

While the rustic appearance of a plain, wood pallet can be beautiful, you could also paint your pallet for a different look. Additionally, you might try painting your flower pots different colors before attaching them to your vertical garden. Your pallet plant display can be leaned against a wall or fence in your yard or on your porch, but you could also place it in your home. If you want to ensure it’s sturdy, you could screw your pallet into a wall so that it hangs nicely.

How to DIY a pallet plant display

Since your plants will be in their own pots, there’s no need to ensure your pallet hasn’t been treated with chemicals, as it shouldn’t affect them. If you’re planning to paint your pallet or flower pots, do this step first. To enhance the appearance of the wood, use a wood stain instead. For those who want to use metal wire, you’ll need to ensure you choose a variety that can support the weight of your plants as they grow, like this galvanized steel wire for $9.38 from Home Depot that can hold 100 pounds. Wrap your wire around each pot multiple times, leaving the ends long enough to go around the boards of your pallet a few times as well. Once the wire is around your flower pot, twist the ends together until it feels secure enough to hold your plant.

Now, sit your pallet upright, hold a flower pot where you’d like it to hang, and wind the wire around the wooden board, twisting it together when you’re finished to hold the pot in place. This method is also great for displaying mason jars or vases filled with flowers in your home. If you’re concerned the wire won’t hold, try using flower pot rings ($16 for 6 on Amazon). These metal rings have brackets that can be screwed into your pallet, and then you can place your potted plants inside. With this budget-friendly DIY, your plants will be organized and beautifully displayed.
