Top 3 Tips for Creating a More Private Backyard

Our living space is not only a matter of function — it is almost sacred as well. According to Purple Heart Moving Group, there are many benefits to having a backyard. It’s where our family grows, our friends congregate, and where we go to recharge after a long day. Whether you’re looking to purchase a home or feel more comfortable where you’re living right now, there are many things to consider. But beyond bathroom size and paint colors, another consideration is the outdoor area of the home. It doesn’t really matter if your yard is large or small — there’s a way to make it a sanctuary you enjoy year-round.

One of the best motivators for spending more time outdoors while at home? Privacy. Fortunately, there are a few different ways to make your backyard look and feel more private — and it doesn’t have to be expensive. With a few simple enhancements, you can greatly expand your living space by making your backyard a safe and inviting place to be.

Plant some privacy

Planting just the right trees, plants, and shrubs can really increase the level of privacy in your yard, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Ornamental grass is a huge creator of ambiance, as it grows both upward and outward. Find mature plants and ornamental grass at a nursery or home improvement store — or, if you have some time and patience — seed your yard and watch your backyard transform over the next few years. According to HGTV, ornamental grass that’s waist-high can create a low-profile moment of intimacy in a large outdoor area. It can also work to frame a smaller yard space.

HGTV also notes that potted palms are a welcome addition to any shady outdoor area. Their big showy leaves work as a privacy screen from nosy neighbors while also adding beauty to your yard with their unmistakably tropical vibe. One caveat with palms — make sure your climate is kind. No species of palm trees will thrive in harsh winters, so this yard look fares best in mild climates or in pots that can be moved indoors if it snows where you live.

Shut the world out

Privacy screens are another great way to seclude your yard from the rest of the world and create a personal sanctuary for yourself, your friends, and your family. There are a few different types of screens. According to Decorated Life, you can find an old wood folding frame and give it new life with fabric panels in any color or design you choose. Thick mesh fabric works best. These wooden frames are easily movable, and depending upon the thickness of the fabric you use, you will be able to enjoy a bit of sunlight peeking through as well.

There are many other ideas for privacy screens as well — tin roof panels, lattice, old oversized shutters, curtains, and anything else you can dream up. Whether you repurpose old items you already have or find at a yard sale, or purchase a ready-made yard privacy screen online, there are plenty of options if you just feel like shutting the world out for a bit.

Act shady

Hide away not only from people but from the sun too with a shade structure. It can add a feeling of privacy to your yard while also making for an inviting space year-round, regardless of the weather. According to Shoreline Pools, pergolas are a great choice if you’d like some shade without a huge expense. You can work a pergola into basically any backyard design, and they are just exposed enough still to let some sunshine through. You can also grow various plant life on your pergola, including vines and climbing floral plants.

If you have a more spacious backyard and a bigger budget, consider a gazebo. These classy structures will add a beautiful look to your yard while also creating additional seating area for party guests. Gazebos allow for great views, a relaxing area to recharge, and a picturesque structure that can be viewed from indoor windows.
