Director, School of Regulation and Global Governance, Australian National University
Sharon Friel is an intellectual powerhouse in the field of public health and has a fascinating professional background. She’s spent time researching chemicals for carpet manufacturing, spent a short stint developing an electronic nose to smell beer, and has had numerous high-profile roles in epidemiology.
Leaving Scotland in the 90’s, Sharon spent many years at the Department of Health Promotion at the National University of Ireland in Galway. She then spent several years as head of the Scientific Secretariat of the World Health Organisation’s global Commission on Social Determinants of Health in London. She is currently a Professor at ANU, Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia, and is Co-Director of the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in the Social Determinants of Health Equity.
At this year’s forum Sharon will be tackling all things climate change, delivering a keynote on the subject, taking part in the Planetary Health Panel, and running a policy workshop on how to engage political leaders to impact change.
